Come to the Table

Deconstructing an iconic image as a platform for critical conversation

PROJECT DESCRIPTION

Come to the Table is a temporary installation that proposes shifting the emphasis from the singular image to a broader diversity of perspectives in architectural discourse. A set of 24 "pixels" forms a reconfigurable table that adapts to different formats and hierarchies, encouraging open discussions about the State of the Art of Architecture on the occasion of the Inaugural Chicago Architectural Biennial. This project was co-designed with Carlo Parente for the Chicago Architectural Club's 130th anniversary. Come to the Table provided a platform for discussions involving professional and academic leaders responding to the CAB 2015 theme.

BACKGROUND & PERMISSIONS

Stanley Tigerman reimagined the Chicago Architectural Club in the 1970s, serving as its president from 1976-79. His iconic conceptual photo collage created during this period and titled "The Titanic" was a provocation intended to challenge the architectural community in Chicago to contend with Mies Van der Rohe's theoretical and pedagogical legacy.

This project was made possible with the support of architect Stanley Tigerman and with permission from the Art Institute, which holds the artwork in its permanent collection.

The 24 individual licensed reproductions that comprise the table were signed by the architect and sold during a silent auction upon the exhibition's closing to support the Chicago Architectural Club.

COLLABORATION & DISSEMINATION

Come to the Table was a companion to the 2015 Burnham Prize competition “Currencies of Architecture”, which challenged participants to develop a single image that responded to the Biennial’s question What is the State of the Art of Architecture today?

The installation was made possible through a collaboration between the Chicago Architectural Club, the Chicago Architecture Center, AIA Chicago, Tigerman McCurry Architects, and The Art Institute of Chicago.

Come to the Table was on display at the “Currencies of Architecture” exhibit at the Chicago Architecture Center in the Santa Fe atrium, September 30 - December 04, 2015, Chicago, IL

This generation of thinkers is beyond icons. I don’t think we live in an iconic age at all. None of these (competition entries) show iconic thinking. I don’t think we have the mechanism to believe in icons.
