P1CT ‘Ohana Suite
Full-scale mock-up of a Phase 1 Clinical Trials infusion suite for Polynesia’s first Early Phase Clinical Research Center
PROJECT DESCRIPTION
A low-resolution mock-up of a private infusion suite was designed and built on-site for in-depth testing with caregivers, researchers, and physicians. Conversations with UHCC’s Patient Advocacy Committee, all survivors of Phase I Trials, or their partners formed the foundation of this project.
Modular wall panels, a CNC peg system, a precisely-scaled infusion chair, and foam-core millwork items are paired with an ecosystem of furniture, healthcare items, and personal objects to further validate specific use cases and key patient scenarios.
BACKGROUND
Infusion treatments can take less than an hour or last more than eight. This process was carefully unpacked through a series of interviews and co-creation sessions with nurses, physicians, researchers, and healthcare leadership. A resulting user journey broke the process down into a series of discrete steps that allowed for further detailed research.
This project was developed within the context of a larger scope that explored alternative scenarios for the utilization of 36,000 sq/ft of existing shell space adjacent to a world-class cancer research center overlooking the Kakaʻako Waterfront Park.
Findings and images from the project supported grant applications and legislative requests that resulted in $13 million dollars of funding for the realization of the built project.
